
Camillus is a town in Onondaga County, New York. At the 2000 census the population was 23,152. Named after Roman military leader Marcus Furius Camillus, the town got its name from a clerk interested in the classics. Camillus is located west of Syracuse. There is also a village named Camillus in the town of Camillus. The majority of the town is a western suburb of Syracuse. In 1825, industrial development was supported by the Erie Canal.
In addition, Camillus was part of a railroad line running from Syracuse to Auburn in 1838.
