The town of Colonie is located in Albany County. The most highly populated suburb in Albany County, Colonie covers roughly 11% of the county, and is also considered the 3rd largest town in Albany County.
At the 2000 census the town’s population was 79,258. Colonie’s name is derived from the Dutch word “Colonye,” representing the Colonie of Rensselaerville. This includes what was once known as Beverwyck and is now Albany. Colonie lies north of the capital on the northern edge, and contains the village of Menands. To the north of Colonie are the Adirondack mountains, providing six million acres of nature to explore.
The town also hosts an abundance of parks, retail shops, playgrounds and sports fields.
