Salina Real Estate Listings and Information

The town of Salina is located in Onondaga County, NY. At the 2000 census the population was 33,290. Salina’s name is derived from the word “salt” in Latin.

The town is a suburb of Syracuse and lies just northwest of Syracuse center. Originally, the area was populated by the Onondaga tribe and later became a part of the Central New York Military tract. In 1797, the Surveyor General of New York State claimed a portion of the Onondaga Salt Springs Reservation for salt manufacturing, which resulted in the town’s name, Salina. Created by a treaty with the Native American people, the reservation spanned a radius of one mile around the Onondaga Lake.

First chartered in 1798, the village of Salina was located in what is now called the Washington Square neighborhood, also know as Syracuse’s “First Ward,” and made up of 16 blocks. The town of Salina was organized in March of 1809. At that time it captured the town now called Geddes (formed in 1848), a portion of Manlius and the city of Syracuse.
