Repainting is one of the least expensive upgrades you can make when getting your home ready to sell – and it has a terrific impact. A newly painted room looks, feels, and smells new.
Repainting isn't just wise, it's vital if your home has rooms done in colors that can turn buyers away. Decorator touches such as a bright red or turquoise wall may look beautiful – but not match a potential buyer's taste or furnishings.
Bedrooms painted to suit a child's age and interests may also turn them away. Think of a little girl's bedroom done in shades of pink, or a teen's room with dramatic black or navy walls. They'd be perfect if the potential buyers had children who would love them, but what are the odds of that?
So think neutrals – but not stark white. In recent years we've seen the introduction of tones of beige and grey ranging from barely off white to chocolate and charcoal used as decorator accents. And now, along comes green.
Mint, olive, and sage are all being presented as "neutrals" when done in pale shades, and as decorator accents in their bolder forms.
According to the website www.colour-affects.co.uk, green is one of the most restful colors. At the center of the spectrum, it is the color of balance. It represents nature and evokes emotions of harmony, safety, refreshment, and rest.
You might not want to take a chance on a potential buyer being attracted to a room with green walls, no matter how pale. However, since those feelings of safety, balance, and harmony are emotions you'd like potential buyers to experience upon entering your home, consider using some bold green accents when staging.
Stick with the "more neutral" neutrals for paint, then add throw pillows, area rugs, lamps, bedspreads, or bathroom linens in your favorite shades of green. Of course, the addition of a healthy green plant or two is always a good idea in staging.
