7 Habits of a Highly Effective Realtor: Habit 1 - Be Proactive!

Of the many interesting and influential business books that I have read over the years, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey, remains a powerful and simple creed that has provided me with guidance in many situations and not least in my actions and behavior as a realtor.

In a series of 7 posts, I am going to outline my '7 Habits of a Highly Effective Realtor', to show how Covey's words are as relevant today as they were when he first wrote them back in 1990.

Those 7 habits are:

Habit 1: Be Proactive 
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind 
Habit 3: Put First Things First 
Habit 4: Think Win/Win 
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood 
Habit 6: Synergize 
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This first article is about: Habit 1: Be Proactive!


Covey's first insight is all about individuals understanding that they can control their character and the actions that stem from that: we should never feel controlled by events, but instead we should control and influence our environment and the way in which we respond to it.

The 'reactive' individual feels controlled by fate and with little ability to change either themselves or what happens to them. Whereas the 'proactive' person sees the potential to make things happen and change obstacles into opportunities, rather than being helpless in the face of change and circumstances.

Therefore, the reactive realtor will just make the listing, do a couple of open houses, and wait to see if a buyer shows up. The proactive realtor, on the other hand, makes sure that they have done everything in their power to bring the right buyer to the home. Beyond listing it and holding open houses, they are going to constantly review things with their clients: what can we be doing to market the house as effectively as possible in order to give it the maximum exposure to the market? 

We're going to look at the staging of the house; we're going to keep the price under review; and respond to feedback coming from open houses and from showings. We're going to make sure that the listing appears in all the right places in terms of the online platforms and that it is search engine maximized to ensure that it appears on the first page of listings. Inquiries from realtors and buyers are going to be responded to swiftly and invaluable feedback sought.

Put simply, as a proactive realtor, I am going to make sure that your house is marketed as vigorously as if it were my own! As Stephen Covey so eloquently says:

I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.

And my pledge to all of my clients is that I will proactively make the right decisions to ensure that I will do everything in my power to get your home sold!
