At no time in your life will you be more thankful to find yourself organized than on moving day. Nothing is worse than looking at stacks of boxes and wondering "Where are the towels?"
- One of the best pieces of advice I've received is designate a color for each room in the new home, such as yellow for kitchen, orange for dining room, etc.
- Apply colored stickers on the box near the box number.
- Put a matching sticker on the door to each room in your new home so the movers will know where to put everything when they arrive at the destination.
- While it may see tedious, the more detailed your label of contents, the happier you'll be. Nothing is more frustrating than having thirsty children and not being able to find the box you packed the glasses in!
The Earlier You Start, the Better:
- About two months prior to moving, sort through closets, cupboards and dressers. Get rid of whatever doesn't fit, you don't use, or you didn't remember you had!
- Inventory everything you intend to move and put a value on it for insurance purposes.
- Obtain estimates from moving companies. Coldwell Banker's concierge will be happy to provide you with names of reputable movers.
A Month or So Prior to Move:
- Notify your childrens' schools and make arrangements for their records to be transferred. Contact the new schools and find out enrollment requirements.
- Make arrangements to transfer/obtain copies of medical records.
- Speak with your insurance agent to find out if you will need to make changes to your policies for coverage purposes.
- Order packing supplies/start packing whatever you don't need at the present time. BE CERTAIN to label sides and tops of boxes. Taking the extra step to label the entire contents in each box will save you a lot of aggravation!!
The Week of the Move:
- Fill out change of address forms at your local post office.
- Cancel newspaper subscriptions.
- Pack an essentials/first night" box
- Accompany movers and as they take an inventory of your possessions and condition report. Keep this in a safe place in case you need to refer to it for any reason.
- If you do not have a cell phone, be certain to let someone know how they may contact you.
- Lock windows, close doors, turn off lights to make sure nothing has been left behind.
