Located in the geographic center of New York State, Oneida County is a unique community of tree-lined streets and close, friendly neighbors. Here you’ll find a slice of "A bit of America at its best"!
In the centuries before settlement, Oneida County was completely wooded and waterways afforded the easiest travel. As a result the Oneida Indian Nation, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois, were located in the western part of the county.
French, English, and Dutch traders knew this land was the key to controlling the fur trade and many battles and raids were carried out from the early 1700’s to the conclusion of the Revolutionary War.
After the war, farmers, millers, and other entrepreneurs created a need for better transportation which was the beginning of the Erie Canal.
