DeWitt is a town in Onondaga County, NY. The town population was 24,071 at the 2000 census. The town is named after a judge and soldier, Major Moses DeWitt.

DeWitt is considered a suburb of Syracuse, and borders that city on its east side.

Le Moyne College was developed in DeWitt and is the site of most of the campus and all academic buildings. DeWitt was part of the Central New York Military Tract. The town was first settled in 1789. The Erie Canal was established within the town in 1825. DeWitt was deemed a town in 1835.

 Jamesville is considered a hamlet in DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY and is part of the greater Syracuse area. The history of the community is documented in the book Water, Wheels and Stone: Heritage of the Little Village by the Creek, Jamesville, New York, written by Jean SchutzKeough. The book was published in 1976 and 1978 by the Jamesville Historical Book Committee. Jamesville is home to the Jamesville Reservoir, a park that contains a small beach, fields and several hiking trails. The fields are the site of the annual Jamesville Balloon Fest where numerous hot-air balloons take to the sky in one weekend.
