Schenectady Real Estate Listings and Information

Located in Schenectady County, the city of Schenectady is the ninth largest city in New York.

The city had a population of 61,821 in the year 2000 census. The word “Schenectady” originated from a Mohawk term meaning “place beyond the pines” or “near the pines.”

Greatly known for what is now the General Electric Company, Schenectady was home to the former Edison Machine Works, founded in Schenectady by Thomas Edison in 1886. The residents of this city have played a large role in many revolutionary technological advancements.

Much like the neighboring city of Albany, there is no shortage of the arts in Schenectady. The magnificently restored Proctors Theater stages Broadway musicals while the Schenectady Civic Players Theater offers full production plays.

Near the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, Schenectady is located in eastern New York State. It is located approximately seven miles northwest of New York State’s capital, Albany.
