Furniture Arrangement - CB Prime Properties

Do you want to see a magic trick that will make your living room more spacious? Abracadabra, alakazam — your living space will be instantly maximized by floating furniture! Don't worry; you don't need a magic wand. Incorporating floating furniture into your home is something that any homeowner can accomplish regardless of room size. Our real estate agents encourage you to learn more about this great way of rearranging furniture, especially if you're going to be envisioning the next chapter of your life in one of our Albany homes for sale.

What is Floating Furniture?

No matter how roomy or cozy a home is, some homeowners may find it difficult to maximize the space in their living areas. Having adequate space becomes especially important as families grow and quarters begin to feel cramped. Thankfully, there's an easy solution that does not require knocking down walls or constructing an addition — floating furniture arrangements.

Floating furniture is a décor trick that makes a room appear more spacious through a specific arrangement of furniture. A floating layout involves moving all furniture and furnishings into the group in the center of the room, leaving space between these objects and the walls. The goal of floating furniture is to provide a useable area that allows people to carry on a conversation casually, move around all of the furniture, and creates a visual space that looks tied together.

For instance, a couch and recliner would surround a coffee table and be anchored in the middle of the room at least one foot or more away from the walls. Other examples of floating furniture arrangements around the home include:

  • Office: Center the desk and office chair in the room, using an area rug underneath to anchor.

  • Entryway: A small table with a potted plant or another piece of décor over a small area rug in the middle of the room.

  • Dining Room: Move the dining room table and chairs to a space in the room that allows for 360-degree movement around it.

  • Multipurpose Space: Use a floating open-back bookcase to split the room in two while creating new storage and decorating space.

What about the bedroom? When arranging this area, some homeowners may not want to have their beds in the center of the room. That's okay — you can still create a floating furniture arrangement visually. Any bedframes and nightstands that can either be anchored into the wall (to remove legs) or that don't sit heavily on the floor will also minimize visual clutter and make the area feel more spacious.

Advantages of Floating Furniture Arrangements

The benefits of floating furniture provide more space for movement, create the illusion of more space in a room, and offer intimacy when relaxing in the space. However, heavy furniture that restricts light and airflow will create a bulky presence even when attempting a floating arrangement.

When selling your home, we encourage homeowners to stage their spaces with a floating arrangement using lighter furniture. This will allow buyers to fully explore a room, making even the smaller areas of a home feel less confined and showing them that their design possibilities aren't limited by the architecture of the space.

Whether you're a remote employee, new parent, or someone who wants to spend a little more time at home with friends and family, learning ways to creatively make your home feel larger and more livable will give everyone the space they need to relax.
