Washing Machine Cleaning Tips - CB Prime Properties

There are spots in every house we don't really think about cleaning very often. For most people, the washing machine is one of those places. The inside of the washing machine can harbor offensive odors, mold, or mildew. None of those things are good for your clothes or your washer! For Albany homes for sale, thoroughly cleaning is a must. You won't want to risk anything that could leave a bad smell and bad impression with buyers. Here's how to get your machine sparkling clean in no time.

Front-Load Washing Machines

  1. Make sure the washing machine is empty.
  2. Remove any visible debris and pet hair from the tub.
  3. Clean the door seal with a cloth and hot soapy water. Use a small amount of mildew cleaner if necessary. Get all around and under the seal. If there is mold or mildew in the folds of the seal, wet paper towels with your cleaning solution, tuck into the folds, and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Remove paper towels and wipe out.
  4. Clean the detergent, softener, and bleach dispensers. If you can remove them for cleaning, do so. If not, use something like an old toothbrush or cotton swab to get into the holes, corners, and around the edges.
  5. Move on to cleaning the tub. Never add clothes when you're cleaning out the washer. Use one of the following cleaning solutions.
    • ½ cup of bleach. Add to the bleach dispenser.
    • 1 packet of washing machine cleaner (sold with laundry detergent at most stores). Add directly to the tub.
    • ½ cup of baking soda. Add directly to the tub.
    • ½ cup powdered enzyme dishwasher soap. Add directly to tub.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use the tub cleaning cycle if you have one. If your machine doesn't have a tub cleaning cycle, just select the longest, hottest cycle with the most water. Select extra rinse, or manually run a rinse cycle afterward.

  1. Open the door, dry the door seal, and let the tub air dry.

  1. Remove any visible debris and pet hair from the tub.
  2. Clean the door and the top rim of the drum.
  3. Clean the detergent, softener, and bleach dispensers. Remove them if you can, otherwise use an old toothbrush or cotton swab to get in the hard-to-reach areas.
  4. Clean the tub. Use the tub cleaning cycle if you have it. If not, use the hottest, longest setting with the most water. Use one of the following to clean the tub.
    • ½ cup of bleach. For HE machines, add it to the bleach dispenser. For standard machines that don't have a dispenser, start the cycle and allow the machine to fill with a little water. Pause the machine, add bleach, and continue.
    • 1 packet of washing machine cleaner (sold with laundry detergent at most stores). Add directly to the tub.
    • ½ cup of baking soda. Add directly to the tub.
    • ½ cup powdered enzyme dishwasher soap. Add directly to the tub.

You may want to use the extra rinse option if you have it, or manually run a rinse cycle afterward.

  1. Open the lid, pull out dispensers, and allow to air dry.
