Mosquito-Free Entertaining Outdoors - Homeowners - CB Prime Properties

Summer bugs can put a real damper on our enjoyment of summer weather. If you're looking for ways to control your mosquito population so you can get out and enjoy your outdoor spaces this summer, our real estate agents have some tips for you. Try one, a few, or all of these approaches, and make your yard somewhere you can relax comfortably this summer!

  • Grow plants mosquitoes hate.
You may be able to limit your mosquito population just with a little creative gardening. Certain plants produce scents that drive mosquitoes away, clearing the area for your own enjoyment. Plants to consider adding to your garden include marigolds, calendula, mint, rosemary, and lemongrass. There's even a geranium that smells like citronella that you can add to your garden.

  • Eliminate or treat any still water.
Still water, such as that in birdbaths and ponds, creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the mosquito population in your yard exponentially. You can make the area less friendly for mosquitoes by refreshing still water in bird baths daily or adding movement to the water in ponds to make them less friendly. If still water is unavoidable, consider adding mosquito dunks to prevent mosquitoes from breeding there.

  • Minimize mosquito hiding places.
If you have mature evergreen bushes, piles of branches and leaves, or other thick underbrush, your yard is probably harboring a lot of mosquitoes. Clean up your yard with this in mind, and make a haven for yourself instead of the bugs this summer! Clear out any debris, trim back evergreens, or replace them entirely with something that won't provide such an ideal spot for mosquitoes to lurk in wait for you and your guests.

  • Spray cedar oil.
You probably already know that cedar is used as a liner for trunks and closets. Cedar works on mosquitoes and other outdoor pests, too! Before you entertain or spend time outside, dilute cedar oil with water and spray it on the grass and garden near where you'll be.

  • Light citronella candles or tiki torches.
Mosquitoes hate the smell of citronella, so something as simple as burning citronella candles on your patio can keep them at bay while you eat, hang out, or entertain. Tiki torches filled with citronella-scented fuel can also help to ward off mosquitoes. Place your candles or torches at intervals in the area where you'll be to ensure sufficient coverage.

  • Create an invisible shield.
Some products on the market will create an invisible bug shield to protect you from mosquitoes. Companies like Off and Thermacell make clip-on personal mosquito repellents that keep bugs away without smelly sprays or scents. Thermacell also makes a larger version that will clear your entire patio, perfect for homes with the large outdoor living spaces that have become popular in Albany homes for sale.

If you love spending time outdoors, whether it's to entertain or to relax in the peace of your own backyard, you'll love a home with a well-designed outdoor living space.
