Memorial Day is a special holiday that honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. Although the federal holiday itself was not made official until the 1970s, the observance of a national Decoration Day on May 30th began in the 1880s to honor those who had lost their lives in the Civil War. Memorial Day was made a federal holiday in 1971 with its observance moved to the last Monday in the month of May.
