The things that I enjoy are usually things that make me feel alive! Music , competitive sports and board games that include two or more people. Outdoors in a crowd or indoors in a crowd is fine with me as long as I'm involved and not just watching. No one has ever had to ask me to dance twice. Singing a good tune comes naturally and getting involved in a spirited political discussion is appreciated. About the only things I love to do that are solitary are reading, watching a great classic movie and listening to Jazz.
Food is my very good friend! I've eaten in some very great restaurants and some not so great joints. Auberge in Nappa, Ventura's in Utica NY, Cotto's in Stamford CT, City Island NY, Lundy's in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn ( Closed now) are all places that suited my palate but My best friend Chef Houcine Mkais' Moroccan Tajine kitchen is the best of them all!
Of all the vacations I've taken, Sedona Arizona for hiking, Morocco, The Grand Canyon and Maui are the places that take my breath away and I return there every chance I get. They hold a spiritual corner of my heart.
Sedona forces the "couch potato" out of my system and replaces it with an energetic journey through the spiritual vortex that comes alive in you only when you climb.
The majesty and deep wonderment of the Grand Canyon screams "enter" but if you don't, peering inside will offer enough grandeur to last a lifetime. I've done both! I actually wept.
If that isn't enough Maui's Mt. Haleakala offers a sunrise at the very top of this famous volcano (10,000 ft.) that dazzles the senses and would make the devil himself a hopeless romantic. The rest of the Island is truly paradise with lush landscapes dotted with all of the colors of the rainbow.
Morocco has provided me with many great things. New family members, beautiful cities with a remarkable history and in my opinion, the greatest food anywhere. like many cultures, food is synonymous with building relationships and bonding. This north African country and the people I met there did all they could to make me not want to come home. I was awash with kindness and a love I'll never forget.
The warm people I've met and become friends with and the majestic beauty of these places are but a small testament to God's work but I'm left speechless nonetheless.
All that's left now is my fantasy trip. first I'll need my wife to go along with the idea of having a dog along. I'd like to have a Border Collie ( great temperament and very intelligent) that I'll name after my brother Bruce and a van to travel across the country to Sedona to hike again.
I was born, raised and educated in New York City and I've lived in each of it's boroughs. As a proud New Yorker I must say that I didn't hesitate at the prospect of living elsewhere. I was happy to live in a hand full of states surrounding my hometown but never too far away from my family and friends. New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Stamford Connecticut, and now Albany, New York.
I've had the opportunity to travel and work in twenty or more states and two continents and it's always refreshing and even surprising when meeting folks, that we are more alike than we are different. That rewards every experience and transforms a visit into a touching life event.
I've had to grow up on the mean streets of a city that moves at warp speed. So maintaining focus on myself and developing a concern for others was a task well worth the undertaking. It wasn't easy. I started out doing everything wrong and doing it the same way all the time. I needed to go somewhere new that required finding an entrance that I'd never taken before. I sought help on many fronts. Fortunately for me a combination of great people, solid family ties and a bit of faith in myself enabled me to choose the path less traveled. It enabled me to tap into a new set of possibilities that ultimately transformed my entire way of thinking and being.
I met my wife on that path and life for me was brand new. I learned more from her than any scholastic instruction or sage input could provide. I got to see and learn what many want but very few obtain. I live with and observe "goodness" on a daily basis. I'm truly a blessed man.
