Don't forget that March 1,2012 is the deadline to file for your STAR tax exemption. Although the state Legislature has been gradually reducing the value of NY homeowners' STAR exemptions, the exemption remains in effect and contnues to provide significant scool tax relief. If you own and live in your home and earn less than $500,000 a year, you are eligible to receive the basis STAR exemption. This does not need to be renewed annually. The exemption saves home owners approximately $500-$700, depending on the town in which they reside.
The "Enhanced" STAR exemption does need to be renewed annually by March1 to prove that your income remains below the state standard. BH-BL homeowners with an Enhanced STAR exemption had $1,059-$1448 deducted from their September 2011 school tax bill.
Applications for STAR must be filed with your town assessor, not the school district. Call your town assessor or visit your town website if you have any questions about STAR. Information is als posted on NY Dept. of Taxation and Finance websiteat www.tax.ny.gov/piy/property/star/index.htm
