Surviving Power Outages

Heat and humidity are definitely concrete signs that summer is definitely here.  Another sign of summer is power outages.  Whether it be a "brown out" or a full-fledged power outage, are you prepared?

Here are some tips to help you survive:

Flashlights and extra batteries are a must. Battery-powered lanterns and touch lights are no fuss, and far safer than candles.  Pets get easily spooked during power outages, so candles are something I prefer to steer clear of.  The last thing you need if Fluffy jumping up and knocking over a candle, or Fido tipping one over with his tail.

Invest in a large, water-proof container.  Some things to put in, just in case:

  • Bottled water
  • First Aid Kit
  • A quality all-in-one multi-tool (with pliers, screwdriver, scissors, etc.)
  • Utility knife
  • Duct tape
  • Long-snout butane lighter (for pilot lights).
  • Matches
  • Deck of cards to keep the kids (and the grown ups!) busy
