Schoharie County comes from a Mohawk word that means Floating Driftwood. The area was once a territory of the Mohawk Nation, along with several other Native American tribes. It was settled by Europeans in 1710, and the county was officially founded in 1795. The area is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. It's adjacent to Delaware, Otsego, and Greene counties, and includes the towns of Conesville, Cobleskill, and Gilboa, as well as the county seat, Schoharie.
